Sailing ships

Title: Sailing ships, Oil-painting on canvas, signed by Dulmen, dated 1956. The German artist Erasmus Bernhard van Dulmen Krumpelman (1897-1987) moved with his family to Amsterdam shortly after his birth. Here he followed a private drawing course at the Keyserschool and continued his studies at the Rijksnormaalschool voor Teekenonderwijzers. In 1918, he became a member of Arti et Amicitiae, where he regularly took part in exhibitions. His connections with August Allebé, George Breitner and Willem Witsen helped van Dulmen Krumpelman to develop his style. His works are mainly characterized by an impressionist style. After his time in Amsterdam, he moved to Drenthe, where he came into contact with the Groningen art group De Ploeg. As a result, his style of painting became freer and richer in color. Van Dulmen Krumpelman's paintings mainly consist of landscapes, city views, circus scenes and portraits. Van Dulmen Krumpelman, the winner of the Drenthe Cultural Prize, was the co-founder of De Drenthse Schilders, an artists' association (1949-1953). Moreover, together with, among others, his om, he was co-founder of the Drenths Schildergenootschap (1954). His works were exhibited in 1984 in a retrospective exhibition in the Drents Museum.
