Title: Bootjes op het water bij bolwerk. ('Boats on the water near a rampart'). Watercolor on hand-made paper, Hand-signed by H.B. Koekkoek. Complete with original frame. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek (1849-1902) mostly signing as Hendrik Barend (H.B.) Koekkoek was a Dutch painter, best known for his landscapes and forest views. He was part of the well-known Koekkoek family of painters and was the youngest son of marine painter Hermanus Koekkoek. Only limited information is available about the life of Barend Hendrik Koekkoek. Educated by his father Hermanus Koekkoek and probably also by his uncle Marinus Adrianus, he painted many landscapes in the Veluwe region. In 1878, he married Carolina Allardina Cornelia Pierson in Rijswijk. Around 1879, he worked briefly in Hilversum and in Brussels. In the same year, he also opened an art gallery in Amsterdam. Around 1882, he left for London, where his brother Hermanus Koekkoek the Younger had already started an art business in 1869. In England, he also worked in the Guildford area, as did his cousin Pieter Hendrik Koekkoek. Barend Hendrik Koekkoek painted in the traditional romantic style so typical of most members of the Koekkoek family. He mainly produced landscapes and forest scenes, regularly with figures. He also produced naval works and townscapes, mostly in the form of genre works. In his English period, he produced several winter landscapes in portrait format, with tall trees. He exhibited at exhibitions in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Arnhem and Haarlem. Works by him are in Museum Paul Tétar van Elven in Delft and Haus Koekkoek in Kleef, among others, but mostly in private collections, mostly in the Netherlands and England.
