In his work, Geert Baas brings together the painting, the painted drawing, and the photograph or found material as clearly and directly as possible. He does this not by blending these techniques, but by presenting them as diptychs or triptychs, which for him represent the ideal form. When composing such mixed works, he searches for the precise moment when everything falls into place — a process in which coincidence plays a crucial role. A significant element in his oeuvre is the line drawing applied directly to the canvas from the paint tube; this may take the form of a tag or a sign that evokes a strong calligraphic image.
